Comments:
Kiel's first appearance as the formidable Jaws -- he will become Moore's quintessential opponent, and he does the job well. In this film, he is more mute than the 'mute' oddjob was, and he is correspondingly more imposing. Jaws' method of murder -- using his industrial teeth is not merely shocking, it leaves a lasting impression that few other henchmen can rival. Jaws repeatedly puts Bond in sticky situations, leaving the viewer to wonder "how will he get out of this one?" Truly the hallmark of an excellent villain.

Jaws is a perfect counter to Moore's wordiness and his metallic denture seems to provide a magnetic attraction to Bond's fist. One of the few criticisms that can be leveled against Jaws is his 'flat' characterization. While this is seeming a consequence of his laudable silence, Moonraker makes it clear that this can be overcome. We fear Jaws but we never truly loathe him, and we are left with a desire for more. Fortunately in this respect, Moonraker does not dissappoint.

Verdict:
3.5/4.0
