Background:
MI6 liason officer posted in Hong Kong for the past two years. Knows Bond, but has never had sex with him.
What She Did To Help Bond:
Informs him that all green Rolls-Royces in Hong Kong belong to a certain hotel, which leads him to Andrea (although if she hadn't cut him off with her car, he would have followed Andrea to the hotel himself); places a homing beacon on Scaramanga's car before getting pushed into the trunk; pushes Kra into the vat, raising its temperature above "absolute zero" (which actually jeopardizes Bond's life instead of helping him); upon their escape from Scaramanga's lair, leads him to his Chinese junk (as if Bond couldn't have found that himself); (hopefully) gets the glass out of the bed in which she and Bond have sex.
What Happened To Her:
Finally has sex with Bond aboard a slow boat from China.
Comments:
Despite what Bond says, there's nothing more to Goodnight than meets the eye. Yet another good idea -- a female MI6 agent with whom Bond works on occasion -- poorly executed. The only difference between Rosie Carver, for example, and Mary Goodnight is that the latter looks good in a bikini (and a towel). There could have been exciting sexual tension between Bond and Goodnight, except no one is buying her hard-to-get act. The only reason they don't have sex until the end of the movie is because Andrea interrupts them. Thankfully Goodnight is the last in the trifecta of early 70's dumb Bond girls. Goodnight herself puts it best when she says, "I'm weak."
